Jonah's Folly (Jonah 1:3-5)

Title: Jonah's Folly (Jonah 1:3-5)

Main Point. The divinely inspired book of Jonah could be described as a public confession of his sin and rebellion against God. This message was intended to confront the same sins of the covenant people of God, both the original recipients of the book as well as the subsequent generations (including you and I). May God grant us the grace to understand our sins, to truly repent from them, and to trust in Christ Jesus as our only Saviour and Lord.

I. It is foolish to ignore the honor and responsibility that God has bestowed upon us.

II. It is impossible to run from God in order to get our own way.

III. God shows us His mercy and grace by not letting us get away with sin and rebellion.
IV. What is the proper response to the loving confrontation of God concerning your sin?

Conclusion: All sin is rebellion against God. It is contrary to what is true and right (God's perfectly just will for us). It is utter foolish to war against the Sovereign Creator of all things and the Judge of the whole earth. Praise God that in His mercy, He has intervened through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ and has sent the Holy Spirit to confront sin, uphold God's righteousness, and warn of the judgment to come (John 16:8-14).
