A Trinitarian Discourse

208

In this passage we see the three persons of the one God manifested in the teaching of Jesus to his disciples. In this long address, given on the night before his betrayal and
death, we read of the Father who sent his Son to earth because of his love for lost sinners. Then we read of the Spirit who teaches mankind the great spiritual truths that reveal our fallen nature, and our need for a Deliverer, i.e., a strong person (the Lord Jesus Christ) who can deliver us from the clutches of our own sin. Throughout this passage we see the personhood of the Father, Son and Spirit demonstrated. For example, in Jesus' teaching we see not only the personhood of the Spirit, but also some of his divine attributes, such as the ability to bring about conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment in the lives of his followers. It is in the experience of believers' lives that they continue to grow in their relationship to the Father, Son, and Spirit, because the Spirit applies the living Word of God to the followers of Jesus.
