1 John 2:12-14 (John 17:1-3, 13-19)

Introduction

· Review “The Admonition” - 1 John 2:15-17
· A Mindset & Desire that flow from a Changed Heart
· Our Struggle Against Worldly Lusts is Helped or Hinder by the Degree of Our Understanding What is Necessary to Overcoming the World

I. The Admonition – “Do not Love the World” (vs. 15-17)

A. The Significance of the Admonition to Not Love the World (v. 15a; John 15:19; James 4:4; Titus 2:12)

B. Two Reasons (vs. 15b-17):

1. The Love of the Father is Not in Him Who Loves the World or The Things in the World; the things in the World are defined (vs. 15b-16)

   2. The World/its Lusts - Temporary in Nature (v.17)

II. What is necessary to Overcome the World – Four Areas of Necessity (vs. 12-14)

A. Must Know Sins Forgiven for His Name Sake (v. 12; Psa. 130:4; Eph. 1:7; 1 Jn. 1:9)

B. Must Know “Him Who is From the Beginning” – Christ (vs. 13a & 14a; Philippians 3:8; 1 Jn. 2:17a)

C. Must know the Father (v. 13c; Jn. 14:7-9; Matt. 6:9; Jer. 31:34)

D. Must know that Our Strength to Gain Victory Over the World is from the Word of God Abiding in Us (vs. 13b, 14b; Eph. 6:10; Psa. 28:7; Phil. 4:13; Psa. 119:11)
