River of Challenge

161

Rivers, as well as providing opportunities for commerce, can also be an obstacle which needs to be bridged. This was the situation when Joshua led the people of God from their wilderness wanderings and brought them to Jordan River in preparation to crossing into the Promised Land. Yet the river was in flood and could not be safely forded. Likewise we are faced with challenges for which there is no wisdom or technology available. One of these is death but we can also see that coming to know God presents spiritual challenges beyond our power as our sins have separated us from our God.

Some people reason that there is no challenge as there is no God we are separated from. Others think that God is love and so we can wish away the obstacle of His holiness and all is well. Others seek another route believing that all roads lead to God. But God has His appointed means to bring us to Himself. As God raised up Joshua, so he raised up the Lord Jesus. The Lord was with Him as was seen in the signs and wonders He did. The word of the Lord was spoken by Him. The Lord made the river to be crossed by supernatural means. So through the Lord Jesus dying on the cross and rising again, we can be brought to God. Have we come to God through Jesus?
