Word of Truth vs. Error

38

As we consider Paul's warning to Timothy and those he is teaching about avoiding "quarrels about words" we discover that these are not just minor "hair-splitting" arguments but involve major doctrines of the faith such as the resurrection from the dead. To disparage these kinds of fundamental Christian truths does great damage to those affected by them. Yet the Christian minister who is consumed with correctly and diligently teaching God's Word will enable his hearers to grow strong in their doctrinal foundation and be able to detect and reject dangerous false teachings. This is a crucial word for us today as we are surrounded on every hand by false teachings and religious cults vying for the minds and hearts of people. Yet in spite of these grave spiritual dangers Paul assures us that true believers stand on the solid foundation of the gospel of Christ and his called-out church, secure in knowing that God knows his own and will keep them safe in his hands. Those who are thus secure in God must depart from iniquity as a necessary response to what it means to be laid hold of by the mighty gospel and salvation that is in the Lord Jesus Christ.
