The doctrine of substitutionary atonement is the essence of the gospel. Get this wrong and your have a false view of the gospel. Get this right and you have peace with God through the death and suffering of the Lord Jesus in your place. Christ died as our substitute to bring us to God. It was a work of reconciliation by interposing in our place to remove our guilty by penal suffering in order to reconcile us to God.
