1 Cor 8-10; Rom 14-15
Review:
Principle of Edification
Principle of Promotion
Principle of Protection
Principle of Caution
The Principle of Relevance- relating to both God and Man
Paul poses 3 scenarios for the discussion of liberty
- Idol Temple- Paul makes the clear point that Corinthians must avoid Pagan worship
-examples of Temple worship: the Lord's Supper, Catholic Mass
- Meat Market- v.25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience' sake
-Observant Jews wouldn't eat anything that isn't Kosher
-Four possible meanings of "All thing are lawful."
A. I cast off all restraint
B. A restatement of their claims
C. An indication that they were not under the Mosaic Law
D. Paul refuses to reject a Corinthian slogan that is correct as it goes, but qaulifies it.
- Home of the unbeliever
-Eat everything before you in an unbeliever's home and to do so without asking questions for conscience sake.
-"But if anyone says to you, "This is meat sacrificed to idols," do not eat it..."
Whose conscience is Paul addressing in 28 and 29?
- Unsaved Host
- Unsaved Guest
- Weaker Brother
- Any Man
The point is Paul believes that every other person's conscience is important to consider when making personal choices
