Sinning Unto Death

Has the church from a wrong view of God, a caricature of God, so separated GOD from SUFFERING & SIN from SICKNESS & DEATH that we fail to see that God does chastise His people for their sins - - sometimes using sickness & even death?? That there can be a quid pro quo (i.e.,"this for that") calculus for sinful behavior??
