The Greeks were renowned for their fullness of statement in the fewest words. Here we have an ocean of meaning in one drop of statement.
This is the fundamental statement of our Lord's 7 sayings from the cross. It is vital to know and understand this one.
If we cannot interpret the meaning of this statement then we cannot begin to even pretend to understand the whole scheme of our Lord's work of atonement for sinners on that cruel cross.
It is the word of Victory. When a thing is finished or brought to completion all the obstacles have been removed. What was a blue print plan is made into reality.
This is like the last spike in the railroad across Canada driven in 1886 by Donald Alexander Smith. Politicians, financiers, and contractors marked the official declaration of completing the project linking eastern and western Canada with the iron railroad. That day the work was finished.
Or when a bridge is built and opened for use. Then is that happy moment of declaring the project done and the first vehicle and passenger cross over.

Our Lord was building a gospel bridge for sinners to cross over from ruin to glory. That cross was a work of bridging the great gulf caused by sin to make a way for sinners to be saved.

In the OT believers trusted in that coming Day when Christ would span the great gulf of sin an provide a way to glory. Since then thousands and millions have crossed over this way.
It is the way for all sinners to be saved.
