The Suffering Servant

In Isaiah 53, the Messiah is described as the Suffering Servant. While the physical pain and suffering of the cross was surely intense, He suffered from the moment He tabernacled in flesh and dwelt among us. He is the only human born sinless into a world of iniquity. He lived His entire life in a world completely contrary to His nature. The climax of His suffering occurred on the cross, not only from physical pain but the much greater pain of bearing up under the wrath of God against the sin of all the elect.
