James immediately gets down to business, exhorting Christians to "count it all joy" when we face trials. James is not commanding how one should feel about trials, but rather how one should think about one's circumstance – the right perspective. James then points to the purpose of those trials. Like an Olympic weightlifter bearing up beneath the lifted weight, so Christians are to endure so that the Holy Spirit might use the trials to make us "perfect and entire, wanting nothing."
