Hosea 4: No Knowledge of God in the Land

172

Israel dit not get the message of the touching drama in chapters 1-3. Gomer, the adulterous wife redeemed from slavery, and reunited to her husband, ceased to be a harlot. Israel (northern kingdom) continued in its idolatry. Chapter 4, likely written at a later time after chapter 3, rebukes Israel for her immorality (1-5); her worldly, liberal, and avaricious priests (6-10); and her sensuous idolatry (11-19). Judah (southern kingdom) is warned to stay away from her wayward sister. Destruction of Israel is threatened in verses 3, 6, 14, and likely 19 figurative of a destroying wind. The root cause of all of this is there is no knowledge of God in the land.
