Christ's Great Work in His Church

How are we to understand Christ's amazing statement that believers will do greater things than he had been doing? He gives a reason why this is so: "because I go to my Father." It was the soon coming death, resurrection and ascension of Christ, with the subsequent outpouring of the Holy Spirit that would bring about the fulfillment of the New Covenant. God promised he would remove his people's sin and transform them internally by the power of the indwelling Spirit (Jer. 31:31-34). It is the radical converting power of the Gospel that would be conveyed through the proclamation of the message of Christ that would transform millions of lives, which is, according to this preacher's understanding, the greater work of which Jesus speaks.
