Christians in Smyrna faced accusation by the Jews and the sentence of death as an illegal religion by the Romans. But Christians are commanded not to fear trials and suffering. Christ is the first and last, who died and came to life, and stands as lord over history and the grave. Instead, we are to remain faithful and endure trails and suffering for their God ordained purpose; that we might be refined, authenticated, and grow into greater Christ likeness.
