J.C. Ryle's Expository Thoughts on the Gospel of Matthew 6:1-8

The Lord Jesus, in this section of the Sermon on the Mount gives His instruction on two vital subjects: namely that of giving and prayer. Giving should be according to means, and in our giving we are to consider how we may do good to 'the bodies and souls' of those in real need.
The Lord Jesus also taught His disciples how important it was to 'get alone' with God. So although circumstances may make it difficult to do, we should try to find a place where we could be on our own, and in solitude pour out our hearts to God.

We also learn from Ryle:

1: The Lord Jesus took it for granted, that all who call themselves His disciples will give alms
2: The Lord Jesus took it for granted, that all who call themselves His disciples will pray
3: In giving, everything like any form of ostentation is to be abhorred and avoided
4: In praying, the principal object to be sought, is to be alone with God
5: We need to keep in mind, that we have to do with a heart-searching and all-knowing God
