God's One and Only Future “King/Priest”

We have seen in our study how God set up the Mosaic Covenant, from Exodus 24 onward, which also established the Levitical priesthood from Aaron's lineage. The Mosaic Covenant further established the Holy of Holies. We have also seen the promise made to David and his heirs through the Davidic Covenant. Thus, any true king had to be of the tribe of Judah and the lineage of David; otherwise he would be a usurper (such as the Herods were). Also, in past studies we saw how no king under the Mosaic Covenant could serve as priest. When Uzziah did this, God was angry and punished him severely.

Yet what the wonderful—yet what seems bewildering—promise that the Messiah would be a priest ruling on His throne in Zechariah 6:12-13. God must have had something important in mind by this apparent contradiction in Scripture—and He did—and His name is Jesus.
