Introduction: 5:17-48 “The Righteousness of the Kingdom.”

I. THE QUESTION AT HAND

A: Is Jesus doing away with the OT and replacing it with something new?

B: A relevant issue for the church

II: RIGHTEOUSNESS RELAXED

A: Legalism always relaxes God’s law.

 •	Limits it to mere external obedience (vv. 22,27,28)

 •	Will lead us to break it in the name of keeping it. (vv. 31-33, 38)

III: RIGHTEOUSNESS RECOVERED & REQUIRED

A: How did Jesus fulfill the law?

 1: Fulfilled its doctrinal teaching. 

 2: Fulfilled its predictive prophecy 

 3: Fulfilled it in His life and death 

B: Righteousness is required from His subjects (19,20,48).
