I. Keeping the Heart Pure from Mammonism

This subject of this text is making the pursuit of riches and the accumulation of wealth an idol of the heart. As in public alms, public prayer, unforgiveness, and public fasting, each has something in common with the others. The primary warning in each subject is against the motivation for self-glorification. Self-glorification is the desire for others to worship us. This was, and is, the single, definitive sin of Satan. Satan wanted other creatures to worship him, because he viewed himself superior to them. This is substance of all these various issues of the heart that Christ addresses in Matthew chapter six.
