Who really wants to suffer? How can the suffering of Christians ever be a good thing?

Certainly at one critical point in his life, Peter decided he didn't want to suffer, and as a result he betrayed His Savior three times in the High Priest's Courtyard. But only a little while later, he was more than willing to stand for Christ before the entire Sanhedrin and then REJOICE when he suffered a beating from them.
