Present Unity and Future Glory
In the final section of the Lord's High Priestly Prayer the Lord turns His attention to the saints of future generations. In His petition of the Father, the Lord prays that the Father will give and preserve the unity of the church, in the same way that the Triune Godhead is in perfect unity. But while the Lord prays for unity, He does not pray for uniformity within the church. Through the centuries men have attempted to enforce uniformity through legislation, which has always ended badly. Uniformity is not unity. Unity is achieved through spiritual oneness, not institutional uniformity. Finally, the Lord prays for the future glory of the saints, that we will not only be with Him in glory, but that we will experience His glory ourselves.
