Noah - A Just Man and Perfect in His Generation

What was the standing of Old Testament believers before the cross? Were they already forgiven and justified before the LORD Jesus accomplished their salvation by His death? If so, what does that say about the forgiveness and justification of sinners? Can it be accomplished before Christ accomplished it? If so, what was the necessity of the cross?
