Q. 42 What is the sum of the ten commandments?
A. The sum of the ten commandments is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and our neighbour as ourselves.
According to our Lord, our whole life is to be about loving God and loving others. The Law and the Prophets hang entirely upon these two commandments (22:40). You might think of all of God's commandments as a tree. The root is to love God, the trunk is to love your neighbour. The branches are all of the other commandments. Without love, they all fall to the ground and wither.
