Lesson 19
Hebrews 6:13-20
A Sure and Steadfast Anchor of the Soul
Main Idea: We need to hold fast to a steady, faithful God in our doubt!
The promise: God promised Abraham a land, people, and blessing (13)
• The promise—five different times (Gen 12, 13, 15, 17, and 22)
• The delivery on the promise
All centered in his son, Isaac
Abraham had to wait 25 years! (15)
The oath: God gave an oath (14)
• How an oath works (15-16)
Swear by something greater than yourself (16a)
• An oath is final for confirmation (16b)
God showed the heirs of promise the unchangeable character of his purpose (17a)
• Guaranteed by oath: Surely I will bless and multiply you! (17b)
The purpose: So that by 2 unchangeable things (promise & oath) (18)
• We who have fled for refuge
• Might have strong encouragement
• To hold fast to hope
The result: We have hope—sure & steadfast anchor of the soul (19-20)
• A hope that enters into the “Holy of Holies”
• Where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf
• He became a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek
Conclusion:
Have full assurance of hope until the end!
