Isaiah's comforting vision of God's people is that of the Lord going on before them – to provide, and coming in behind them – to protect.

The soul of every marching saint is therefore encircled by God, barricaded in by God, surrounded by God as with a wall of steel and iron.

This wonderful promise holds out massive encouragement for a New Year: “The Lord will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward.”
