The Son Loves His Bride

We come to the end of our study of Isaac and Christ, noting the similarities and differences between them.

The Scriptures tell us that Isaac loved Rebecca his bride. This is amazing when you consider that he had never seen her before, and he had no part in choosing her. Yet when she was presented to him, he loved her.

But how much more astounding it is that our Lord Jesus loves His bride the Church!

Rebecca was beautiful, but God's people were brought to the Savior dirty and unclean and arrayed in filthy garments. We were helpless and rebellious and full of the guilt of sin.

Yet Jesus loved us!

It cost Isaac very little to love Rebecca, for he was very well off.

But it cost our Lord Jesus everything to love us. He was used to dwelling in holiness and glory in the presence of a host of adoring, worshipful Angels. But in his incarnation, he lived amongst a sinful, unbelieving, ungrateful, unholy people. When God brought His people unto Christ, there was nothing in our character or conduct to commend us to His love.

Yet Christ loved us!

And the cost to Him of His love was the horrible death that He died to save his bride! He put Himself between us and the awful wrath of God for our sin! He shifted our blame upon Himself, so that we might go free.

And He has made us spotless and without blemish by His obedience and blood.

Isaac loved Rebecca, but that love was quenched at death. Isaac's love could not save Rebecca from the grave.

But praise God, our Lord Jesus' love for us cannot be quenched by death! He has destroyed death and hell for us at Calvary! One day we shall see Him with our own eyes, and so shall we ever be with the Lord!
