Blessings and Curses, Part 1

200

In the wake of the curses and blessings recorded in Deuteronomy 27-28, people are warned in Deuteronomy 29:19 that they cannot superstitiously pronounce words over themselves to counter the consequences of their disobedience if they continue in sin.

This sermon explores the idea that a curse calls down the judgment of God as a consequence of sin. We explore passages such as the prohibition of Leviticus 19:14, regarding cursing the deaf, and Zechariah 5:1-4, where the curtain is pulled back to illustrate how curses operate.

We conclude with the beautiful sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, who drank down the curses due us when he died on the cross, and the result that the wine of Communion is sweet to all believers (Mark 14:36; 1 Corinthians 10:16).
