Law and Gospel Contrasted

46

In Pilgrims Progress Christian is shown into the Interpreter's House where he observes a parlour floor being swept, the rising dust almost chokes until a damsel springles on water. This, said the Interpreter, is the difference between the law and the gospel. The dust is our original sin which is roused by the law until it chokes. The water is the gospel which brings sweetness and peace.
In the passage before we have a presenattion of the contrast between the law and the gospel.

  1. The glory of the law
  2. The glory of the law exceeded by the gospel
  3. The glory of the law was temporary.
  4. Application
(NB refernce was made to Livingstone and the 1625 revival, it should have been Gendinning.Livingstone was at Killinchy whereas Glendinning was at Holestone where the revival began. The 1625 revival is often referred to as the Six Mile Water revival. It is interesting to note that less than 20 years later many of those converted were put to death in the 1641 massacre)
