Not Corrupting the Word

Strong convictions and clear expressions always seemed to be the hallmark of the sermons and writings of the Evangelical Bishop J. C. Ryle. In this address, originally given to a meeting of fellow ministers in August, 1858, he lays out what he believes are three of the ways in which the Word of God is corrupted

Bishop Ryle asserts that the Word of God is corrupted:

1: When doubt is cast on the plenary inspiration of the Word of God.

2: When preachers make defective statements of doctrine

3: When defective practical applications are made of what is preached.

He also helpfully points out the positive lessons we can learn from understanding these things.

1: Ryle asserts that preachers should strive to “feel like men commissioned to speak for God”.

2: Preachers should “aim to speak as in the sight of God”.

3: Preachers should “aim to speak as in Christ”.

He concludes this short address with a challenge, and those of us who are preachers cannot fail to have been stirred by such pointed and encouraging words.
