Adultery, Marriage, & Divorce

Jesus shows that the Pharisees also misunderstood marriage. They saw divorce as permitted under almost any circumstance, so long as it was properly documented by the husband. This teaching put wives in bondage to unscrupulous husbands, who could use the threat of divorce (and the economic impoverishment that would undoubtedly come with it) to enslave their own wives. In our own age, divorce and serial marriages are rampant - and even celebrated as healthy. Our obligation before God is to love our spouse as Christ does; i.e. never considering a departure or break, but always keeping the solemn promise of love to us, despite our many sins.
