Sins to Kill & 2 Motivations to Kill Them
Series Through Ephesians
27
God is very specific about what sexual immorality is [Lev. 18]
Sins we need to rid of our lives [Eph. 5:3-4]
- Immorality: fornication, sexual immorality, any illicit sexual relation (adultery, homosexuality, harlotry, prostitution, incest, etc...) [Matt. 5:27-28, 31-32; 15:18-20; 19:8-9 | 1 Cor. 5:1-2, 9-12; 6:13-20]
- Impurity: a state of moral and spiritual uncleanness that was characteristic of ones pre-Christian life [1 Thes. 4:7-8 | Rom. 6:19]
- Greed: when you want more of something that is not rightfully yours [Eph. 4:19 | 2 Tim. 3:4]
How can we flee sexual immorality?
- Know this is God's will [1 Thes. 4:3-5]
- Take no prisoners [Matt. 5:29-30] "Be killing sin or sin will be killing you" - John Owen
- Know and believe the gospel [Rom. 6:13-14]
- Marriage [1 Cor. 7:1-2]
Additional sins to abstain from:
- filthiness: behavior that flouts acceptable social and moral standards (shameful behavior, filthy talk, obscenities, etc...)
- silly talk: foolish/moronic talking
- course jesting: dirty speech/jokes [Titus 2:7]
Two compelling motivation to mortify sin [Eph. 5:5-6 | 1 Pet. 1:14-16]
- No inheritance in Christ kingdom [1 Cor. 6:9-11 | 1 John 3:9]
- Because of these things the wrath of God comes [Rom. 1:18-32]
Therefore do not be partakers in their sinful lifestyles [Eph. 5:7]
