God's Wrath and Our Mercy
Main Idea:
Genuine Christian love overcomes evil with good.
Notes on “The Wrath of God”
- God is wrathful.
- God’s wrath is fearful.
- God’s wrath is inevitable.
- God’s wrath is avoidable.
Genuine Christian love overcomes evil with good.
It does not avenge itself (19a)
Rather, it leaves vengeance to the wrath of God (19b)
Ground: Scripture says vengeance belongs to God (19c)
It cares for its enemies’ needs (20)
It feeds him (20a)
It gives him drink (20b)
Result: It “heaps burning coals on his head” (20c)
It is not overcome by evil (21a)
Rather, it overcomes evil with good (21b)
Applications
Don’t avenge yourself!
Trust in the sovereign God of the universe, who will always do what is right!
Remember the justice of God—there will be eternal accountability
(for me AND them!)
Bathe your enemy in grace! (or donuts, as the case may be!)
Overcome evil with good!
