The Parable of the Wedding Feast - Part 2

73

It is important to note that this parable is unique to Matthew. There are some scholars and commentators who suggest that this parable is nothing more than an elaborated version of “The Parable of the Great Supper” that is found in Luke 14:15-24. Although it must be admitted that both parables are somewhat similar in nature, in each case the context is different, the meaning is different, and thus the application intended by Jesus is different. Therefore, in our study of this parable, we will treat it as being independent of the parable in Luke, and as being unique to Matthew. As this chapter opens in the Gospel of Matthew, it is apparent that the discussion recorded is a continuation of the Lord’s previous encounter with the religious leaders. Since this appears to be the case, the parable now under consideration must also be understood in relation to that encounter and the two previous parables spoken by Jesus.
