Zacchaeus.

16

This is the third sermon of a five in a series concerning the manner in which Christ dealt with different people He came into contact with. The location was Jericho, which had a long history in relation to Israel, being the first city they conquered, by the miraculous power of God, as they began the conquest of Canaan. Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector, small in physical stature, and, no doubt, much despised. Evidently, he had heard Christ preaching and was much impressed. Being small in stature, he climbed up into a tree in order to see him as He passed by. How surprised he must have been when Christ looked up and addressed him by name, bidding him to make haste and come down, saying that He, Christ, must abide at Zacchaeus's house that day. The Lord did not preach the to him because evidently Zacchaeus had already heard Christ preach and believed on Him. When they got to Zacchaeus's house, Zacchaeus said that he would give half of his goods to the poor and would restore fourfold any money he had unjustly obtained. This was clear evidence of his repentance. As usual, the self righteous murmured saying that Christ sat with sinners. Jesus, bore testimony to the salvation of Zacchaeus, saying that salvation had come to his house and that he was a son of Abraham. No doubt the Lord meant that Zacchaeus was now a son of Abraham in a spiritual sense and not just in a fleshly sense. He reminded the people that the Son of Man had come to seek and to save that which is lost.
