Church Discipline (Part 2)

Introduction

I: THE EXECUTION OF DISCIPLINE (1-5)

• Not to be used for every small fault or sin (1)

• Culminates in excommunication (2,5,7,11,13, Matt. 18:17)

• Executed in the name & by the authority of the Lord Jesus (3-5a, cf. Mt. 18:20)

• Is to be executed with sincere mourning (2b)

• Is for the benefit of the person disciplined. (5).

II: THE REASON FOR DISCIPLINE (6-8)

A. Protects the church from the infection of sin (6).

B. Because of the nature of the church (7-8)

III: THE APPLICATION & RESULT OF DISCIPLINE (9-13)

A. The Application: We should be hard on ourselves, not on unbelievers.

B. The Result: Maintain a positive witness to the world. (Acts 5:13-14a)
