God Hates Religion - Message 6 - The Sin of Irreverence - Amos 5:16-27. The Day of the Lord appears first in Amos in a manner contrary to popular belief among the people. This "Day of Sovereign Conquest" was believed to be a great day of rejoicing, rescue, and reward bringing judgment upon the enemies of God's people and bringing deliverance and vindication to Israel. Instead, due to the people's irreverence and idolatry, we learn that it will be a terrible day of doom, darkness, and destruction.
