The Word of God is Living and Active

The Five “Rests” of Hebrews 4:
God’s rest on the 7th Day (4, 10)
Israel’s rest in Canaan (2, 3, 7, 8)
Israel’s rest in David’s time (Psalm 95:7b-11) (5-7)
Our rest now (3, 10)
Our rest in glory (9. 11)

Main Idea: Let us strive to enter God’s rest because of God and His Word

• Because the word of God is living and active (12)

 It is sharper than any two-edged sword

 It is penetrating

 Can separate soul and spirit

 Can separate joints and marrow

 It is discerning of the thoughts and intents of our hearts

• Because God is knowledgeable of our sin (13)

 No creature is hidden from His sight

 All are naked and exposed to the Judge

Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
