Jesus Christ, the Door

When reading the gospels, it does not take long for one to notice that the Savior was fond of using parables. He did so to fulfill a two-fold purpose as He explained to His disciples, thus: "And the disciples came and said to Him, 'Why do You speak to them in parables?' He answered and said to them, 'Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.'" (Matthew 13:10 – 13) Sometimes, the parables are hard to understand even for those who are in the light. And sometimes, a parable is hard to understand and the Savior provides His own explanation. This is the case with the text today. The Lord's explanation of the previous metaphor is another metaphor; He is the door of the sheep. This simple metaphor reveals much about the truth He is intending to convey and it is given to us so that we will understand. – Pastor Schlegel
