Revenge, Revulsion, or Love?

Sermon: Matthew 5:38-48

Introduction:

I. The first saying:
A. The misunderstanding – using the lex talionis for personal vengeance

    B. The principle Jesus affirms – do not resist the evil man

         C. Illustrations
    1. turn the other cheek
    2. sued for your shirt

    3. conscripted for 1,000 steps

    4. the beggar and the borrower

II. The second saying:
A. The misunderstanding – love is restricted only to my neighbor, I am free to disregard or hate others, especially my enemies

        B. The principle Jesus affirms – love and pray for your enemies

C. Illustration –
    1. Go shows love for enemies (evil, unjust) by giving them sun and rain
            

III. The meaning for us today: Who is your enemy?
