THE CARE AND FEEDING OF ELDERS:
COMPENSATION, DISCIPLINE, AND SELECTION

Main Idea: We must care for our leaders!

• Fair compensation (17-18)
 Double honor to elders who rule well (17a)
 Especially those who labor in preaching and teaching (17b)
 Principle of “fair reciprocity” (18)

• Fair discipline (19-21)
 Protect elders from unfair accusations (19)
 Rebuke guilty elders publicly (20)
 Understand the seriousness of impartiality (21)

• Deliberate selection (preventive) (22-25)
 Do not be hasty in the selection process (22a)
 Don’t take part in the sins of others (22b)
 Keep yourself pure (23)
 Give time for character to show itself (24-25)
