The Jerusalem Council, Part 3: Decision

In the text before us we discover the decision made by the council to settle the issue of acceptance of uncircumcised Gentile converts. The issue is of vital importance because it threatens the welfare of the church and the expansion of the gospel and Christ's kingdom. It was clear that Gentiles were being saved and churches of Gentiles were being formed, but they were not following the rites necessary under the Mosaic Covenant to be included in the covenant community.

After hearing the testimony of Peter supported by Paul, it was determined that Gentiles were not required to submit to these rites. The prophecy of Amos (9:11, 12) clearly supported that conclusion. Thus, a letter was drafted to send to the Gentile churches explaining the decision of the council.

The letter contained a list of four items that the Gentiles were asked to observe. On first read, the items seem very strange. What do they mean? Why these four? If circumcision is not required, are they required? If so, is does the decision seem a bit contradictory?
