Abiding in Jesus Christ - I Am the Vine, You are the Branches

The scripture says that we must abide in Christ. What does this mean? Christ is the vine; believers are the branches. Branches cannot produce fruit of themselves. They rely on the vine to send sap into them. If Christ is the vine and we are the branches, then the Holy Spirit is the sap that brings forth fruit in the branches. We do not bear fruit by strenuously exerting ourselves. We do so by abiding -- by resting in Jesus Christ and trusting Him to work through us.
