I cannot go with these

149

A critical moment in Israel has come. After 40 days of humiliation at the hands of Goliath, there is at last a man to stand for the honour of God’s name and defend Israel. Fresh from the sheep pasture, David exudes confidence in God that he can take on and defeat this champion blasphemer.

He is a man who sees and believes in the cause of God, v29, 46-47. That cause burns in his heart and he pledges himself to live or die by it. However it arouses jealousy, disbelief, even slander it is a cause that once he has espoused it, he cannot be deflected from it. Sadly, it is a cause that many among God’s people do not see sufficiently to stand and fight for.

In pursuing that cause he comes to a point where he is challenged in this text to adopt means and methods that threaten the success of his cause by calling him to rely on something other than the Lord’s presence and power. Here is an intensely individual and personal experience that is written for our instruction. David comes to a point where victory and all contingent upon it hung in the balance of the decision how he approached the battle.
