Why I Believe in God

Every human being knows that the true God exists. The root of atheism is not creation with its wonderful order; it is what unfolds in history.

Psalm 19 tells us about two books: the book of nature and the book of special revelation, Scripture. The whole creation bears irrefutable witness to the existence of the true God.

Also, Romans 2:14-15 informs us that all humans have an instinctive awareness of right and wrong. All of humankind have the remnant of the divine image and so their consciences speak to them.

Furthermore, Romans 8:18-22 teaches us that the world around us is a world that is under the curse and judgment of God because of human sin.

Romans 1:18-20 informs us that every human knows that the true God exists and that he is angry with human sin -- not only that he WILL judge sin but that he displays his wrath in the present world here and now.

So it isn't creation that people react to when they profess atheism; it is the display of the wrath of God in history.

But this God of wrath has given us another book, the book of Scripture, the book of the gospel of God's love for us in Jesus Christ. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

The God who displays his holy and just wrath in Providence is the same God who displays his love for the world in the Cross. The second sermon in this short series, "Why I Believe the Gospel," focuses on the great resolution at Mount Calvary.

The third message, planned for Sunday, November 9, "Why I Believe the Word of God," focuses on the practical proof that the Bible is true.
