Some people do understand Genesis 1 in a straightforward way. Genesis 2 is a more detailed account of the creation of man & the garden. Because God put Adam in the garden he did not till the ground or have to deal with thorns shrubs. But the Framework Hypothesis claims that God couldn't have used supernatural means after the initial creation of matter. So Genesis 1 can't be a chronological history.
