GOD PRESERVES A REMNANT
TEXT: 2 Kings 11:1-21

SUMMARY: This dark period of history, in which God preserves Judah, her king, and His righteous remnant, is but another chapter in God’s continuing care and preservation of His church.

EXPOSITION:

I. JUDAH ENDURED A PERIOD OF DARK OPPRESSION, vv. 1-3.
A. Evil was practiced openly.
B. Righteousness was Oppressed.

II. JUDAH EXPERIENCED A DIVINE DELIVERANCE, vv. 4-16.
A. God’s Man is in Place, v. 4.
B. God’s People Prepare, vv. 5-11.
C. God’s Plan is Carried Out, vv. 12-16.

III. A SPIRITUAL REMNANT IN JUDAH WAS PRESERVED, vv. 17-21.
A. Jehoiada’s Twofold Solemn act, v. 17:

  1. A religious covenant
  2. A civil covenant.
    B. There followed a great religious reformation, 2 Chr. 23:17-21.

APPLICATION:

There is a beautiful picture of the church here in this passage:
I. LIKE THE GODLY PEOPLE OF JUDAH, THE CHURCH WILL BE TESTED THROUGH OPPRESSION.
A. True of the godly OT Jews.
B. True of the Early Church.
C. True of the true church today.

II. AS IN THE OVERTHROW OF ATHALIAH, THE TRUE CHURCH IS DELIVERED THROUGH DIVINE INTERVENTION.
A. From Internal Corruption.
B. From External Opposition.

III. LIKE THE RIGHTEOUS REMNANT OF JUDAH, A REMNANT OUT OF THE CHURCH WILL BE SPIRITUALLY DELIVERED.
